Bio

Shih-Chin Chen retired from ABB after 36 years of service. He holds a PhD in Control Systems Engineering and a bachelor and a master’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering.

At ABB, Shih-Chin was responsible for the R&D of various control solutions for pulp and paper industry. He led the development of 1190 QCS control solutions for paper machines and the advanced control applications in 800xA control systems. His technical contributions are in the area of quality measurement processing, quality control (MD, CD, and color) applications, scanners and process diagnostics, and control performance optimization. He holds more than a dozen patents and has published various technical papers on paper and pulp process controls. He is currently consulting on advanced process control implementation and applications.

Shih-Chin has been a member of TAPPI since 1988. He has served various volunteer roles in TAPPI including PaperCon track manager, Division Technical Chair, Process Control Division Chair 2010-2012 and was named TAPPI Fellow in 2011. He has received three Jasper Mardon Memorial Prizes, four Process Control Division Best Paper Awards, 2008 Process Control Division’s Leadership and Service Award, and TAPPI 2019 Gunnar Nicholson Gold Medal Award. He is a life-time member of TAPPI and IEEE.
