TAPPI Nano Producer Committee Seminar: Opportunities For Common Efforts

When:  Apr 11, 2023 from 10:00 to 11:00 (ET)

Join this Seminar to learn: Opportunities for Common Efforts at RISE

TAPPI Nano Producer Committee’s seminar: The Opportunities for Common Efforts at RISE, is taking place on Tuesday, April 11th from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM (EST).

Dr. Robert Nilsson will discuss current challenges motivating enhanced effort in the research and upscaling of nanomaterials. What are the emerging application areas with volume to high end use? This question will be elucidated based on experience and ongoing research. Dr. Nilsson will also present RISE’s view on circular economy and discuss its implementation.

Meet the Presenter: Dr. Robert Nilsson
Researcher and Project Manager at RISE

Dr. Robert Nilsson acquired his PhD 2010 studying fiber and wood development at Umeå Plant Science Centre, UPSC. The thesis was midpoint of a career starting 1990 at Europe’s largest pulp mill located in northern Sweden, using TCF bleaching and recycling. Analysis of feedstock, process chemicals, intermediates, and final product as well as customer reclamations and research, triggered a need for further studies. Potential of using biotechnology made his choice easy, Nilsson secured a Master of Science in Engineering Biology at Umeå University. Nilsson also achieved a traditional MSc in Chemistry with Biotechnology and a specific track into plant science. At UPSC’s state-of-art instrument park of mass spectrometers, Nilsson achieved a PhD and finalized his thesis in “A Study of the Molecular Pathways of Wood Formation using Peptide Mass Spectrometry”. At this time, Nilsson also found his wife, got a son, and moved back home to implement new biorefinery concepts in the Cellulose and paper technology teaching. At the Division of Chemical Engineering, Luleå University of Technology, Nilsson managed research projects in collaboration with industry and performed teaching in the subject of biochemical and chemical process technology to produce materials, chemicals, drugs, and fuels from forest biomass. In 2016, Nilsson went back to industry to join BillerudKorsnäs as a Specialist in Fibre Materials. At Tech Center Fibre Materials, Nilsson served as project manager of internal and external projects (some in collaboration with RISE), participated in design of new laboratory and pilot plants, purchase of equipment, development of analysis methods and production systems to produce new fibre-based materials.

Today, Nilsson continues the research projects launched to find sustainable materials at RISE Research

Institutes of Sweden. Since 2021 Nilsson has worked as researcher and project manager within the Smart materials unit of the Department of Materials and Surface Design. Among public projects, he is heading the WP2.3 Scaling and techno economy within the MISTRA-funded TerraClean research program, targeting air and water cleaning. Nilsson also manages an internal strategic program to find new binders and additives as

well as several bilateral customer projects.
